An Unusual Request A customer recently requested roller shades to cover the outside of South facing windows that generated a lot of heat. They had considered large bulky roll shades made of tubular mats of vinyl tubes. They wanted something a little less conspicuous but having the same heat reflective properties. Our solution was roller shades as pictured below. One problem to overcome was how to batten down the bottom of the shade. We substituted a 3/4" round hardwood dowel in the place of the flat wood strip in the bottom sewn pocket. Decorative brass upholstery tacks were used to fix the dowel in place as pictured below. We then used galvanized conduit clamps as clips to hold down the bottom of the shade. Note the slight modification of the conduit clamp to facilitate positioning of the dowel. The curvature was changed enough to give a slight resistance to the positioning of the rod. (i.e. The rod has to be gently forced up into the bracket.)
